Brilliant discussion about the amazing work that Matt and Hayley are doing in Greater Manchester around making exercise and movement a part of everyday living.
Hayley is the Exec Lead for Greater Manchester Moving and CEO at GreaterSport and Matt is a consultant Chest Physician specialist in lung cancer, pleural disease & tobacco dependency and the clinical Lead for the Greater Manchester CURE Project.
"Designing moving back into everybody's life and making it everybody's business." - What a fantastic quote from Hayley about the importance of physical activity.
Aktiv mot kreft is a brilliant charity based in Norway and means Active Against Cancer. Helle is the co-founder of Aktiv mot kreft (Active Against Cancer) based in Norway.
Aktiv Against Cancer is a foundation working to ensure that physical exercise becomes a part of standard cancer care. The foundation establishes fitness centres for cancer patients in hospitals in Norway and educates AKTIV instructors in collaboration with Oslo university hospital and the Norwegian School of Sports Science. AKTIV instructors are certified to work out with cancer patients after treatment.
Just one of the fantastic quotes from Helle: "Prehabilitation becomes a standard part of cancer care, it's all about being the best prepared patient possible... Enable the patient to take part in his/her treatment from day one."
"Focus on the things that are important to you and that are controllable and don't let your mind beat you up if it's a constant stream of other things - you can start to tune that out through mindfulness and checking in with yourself to sharpen your focus and attention."
We think that one really important thing that we can all take away from this is to: Focus on what you CAN control.
Rebecca and Helen are our brilliant Endcliffe (Sheffield) 5KYW ambassadors. Rebecca is also a consultant in Exercise Medicine and Helen is a Health Research Fellow at the Uni of Sheffield. Debbi Rowley is an Advanced Physiotherapist working at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
"Having routine is so important.. What does everyone want to get out of today? Break things down and have open conversations. Make sure everyone's needs are being met."
Zoe Merchant is the Programme Lead for Prehab 4 Cancer and Recovery Programme in Greater Manchester. Kirsty Rowlinson-Groves is the Prehab 4 Cancer Programme Manager. Lynne Allan is a cancer patient who has been through the Prehab 4 Cancer programme.
This is a brilliant conversation about how important the role of exercise is when living with and beyond cancer. Lynne describes how much it has helped her going through the programme and we were all left wishing that it could be rolled out nationally! .
